-- A Precious Memento Makes Its Way Home --

Estella Lawson Collection   (Bonine Research Library)

On June 3, 2020 URSCC members wrote to me about a photo album available on Ebay.  It was African Americans from Calvin Township and Vandalia, MI dating back to the 1850's, including many tin types, a priceless album. (More)

Many free blacks who came to this area either had money to purchase their own land, or earned money working for others; some living in Ramptown.  When they were ready to buy their farms, they chose Calvin Township for many reasons.  Chain Lake and Mt. Zion churches were established there, land was affordable, and the Quaker community was close by to offer help and protection.

Calvin Township played an important role in the Underground Railroad, and its history reflects that legacy to this day.

Calvin Township has a unique history, and we are pleased to present various documents that reflect this history.
